Unit 5. Going out for a Meal .

Грамматика: Настоящее длительное время .

Оборот to be going to. Alittle, afew .

Meals in Britain A traditional English breakfast is a very big meal-sausages, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms… But nowadays many people just have cereal with milk and sugar, or toast with marmalade, jam, or honey. Marmalade and jam are not the same!

Marmalade is made from other fruit. The traditional breakfast drink is tea, which people have with cold milk. Some people have coffee, which is made with just hot water. Many visitors to Britain find this coffee disgusting!

For many people lunch is a quick meal. In cities there are a lot of sandwich bars, where office workers can choose the kind of bread they want-brown, white, or a rolland then all sorts of salad and meat or fish to go in the sandwich. Pubs often serve good, cheep food, both hot and cold. Schoolchildren can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a snack from home-a sandwich, a drink, some fruit, and perhaps some crisps .

Tea means two things. It is a drink and a meal! Some people have afternoon tea with sandwiches, cakes and, of course, a cup of tea. Cream teas are popular. You have scones (a kind of cake) with cream and jam .

The evening meal is the main meal of the day for many people. They usually have it quite early, between 6 and 8 p. m. and often the whole family eats together .

On Sundays many families have a traditional lunch. They have roast meat, either beef, lamb, chicken or pork with potatoes, vegetables and gravy. Gravy is a sauce made from the meat juices .

The British like food from other countries too, especially Italian, French, Chinese and Indian .

7. What is commerce?

THE STRUCTURE OF COMMERCE

Commerce is a process that is connected with the production and distribution of goods and the providing of

services. The process can be summarized by the Chain of Commerce:

raw materials – manufacturer – wholesaler – retailer – consumer .

The production of goods starts at the raw material stage. Most of British raw materials come from overseas countries. Examples are: oil from Middle East, metals from South Africa, rubber latex from Malaysia and wood from Canada. These raw materials are made into finished goods by the factories. This process is called manufacturing. There are three kinds of manufacturing: unit production, batch production and mass production .

The next stage in the cycle is the wholesaler, whose principal task is to store the goods, usually in large quantities and in many varieties. The wholesaler sells the goods to the retailers, who display the goods and sell them to consumers. Retail shops may be large, such as a supermarket or departmental store, or small, as in the case of a corner shop .

If the goods and the raw materials are to be distributed and sold efficiently the services of banking, transport, insurance and advertising will be needed by every link in the Chain of Commerce, from the raw material stage to the consumer stage. These services are called the Aids to Trade .

British banking is controlled by the Bank of England, which has its headquarters in London, but manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and consumers deal mostly with the commercial banks. There are three main kinds of transport: land, sea and air. Insurance is a financial protection against an event which may happen. Advertising also plays a very important part in commerce .

British main industries may be classified as manufacturing, extractive, construction, agriculture and forestry, fisheries, tourism .

When the course was over, each found time on her hands, but already they had received several enquiries from other friends and acquaintances for cardigans and jumpers, and from time to time they got together to help each other out. One day, Jean said 'Look here, Alice, why don't we organize ourselves on a regular basis and try to make some extra cash as well as helping our friends out?' Alice was a bit doubtful .

'It's true,' she replied, 'I'm quite good at machine knitting, and you've quite a flair for designing knitting patterns but what about keeping accounts, and VAT? And there's another thing, if we're going to do this properly I'll need a new knitting machine.' Jean was now less confident: 'I hadn't thought of that - and what do we do when we've run out of orders - I don't see myself as a sales assistant. We'd need help .

"What's it about then?" asked Betty anxiously - her future depended on Peter's success .

"You remember, Betty, that we saw those management consultants last week. They told me on Monday that all this 'hand-made' furniture was a load of rubbish, really. We could turn out a great many more chairs at lower cost -they might look alike, but that's a risk I'm prepared to take .

"Well, we got this expert to time the staff when they weren't looking and he thinks we can halve the times. I sent him down on Tuesday to show the workers exactly how to do the job, so they don't make a mistake. We must keep up the quality as well as quantity. Tony Harris, who's been here donkey's years gave his notice in first. I rather thought he would - the "craftsman" type, but what shook me was Frank Watts and Dick Morris - both young lads!" 9. MY FUTURE PROFESSION Our life has been changed greatly. Many conceptions have been changed too. Our University trains specialists in different spheres of service: technology, maintenance of vehicles, computers, accountancy, law and tourism. It trains economists and managers too. But the meaning of their professions is not the same as before. The economic situation in our country is rather complicated now, the country needs good specialists for its national economy, and the profession of an economist is one of them. The sphere of activity of economists is constantly expanding and increasing more and more .

A qualified economist knows bookkeeping, marketing, management and all aspects of economic activity of enterprises, etc. It‘s very important for a specialist to be a skillful user of a computer and to speak foreign languages .

Companies and firms need to be constantly engaged in product development, if they wish to grow and make profits. They must know everything about market. And, of course, they need qualified specialists in marketing .

Economists take part in joint-ventures and joint-stock companies, work for big international companies. They must know how to redistribute funds and material resources, conduct work to strengthen cooperation with firms and banks. They access data about the conditions of both home and foreign markets and collect bank of information .

Future economist must know a lot about payments and bank accounting operations. He must be ready to use new and innovative ways of doing business .

Now with rising new companies and commercial deals, some new doors are opening up for our graduates and more and more major companies are eager to explore potential of new economists .

The way of business organization and control depends largely on business size and what it does .

There are four types of business organization: the one man business (sole trader); the partnership; the private limited company; the public limited company .

When we think about business organizations we must always ask ourselves:

1. Who owns the business?

2. Who controls the business?

3. Who provides the capital for the business?

The one man business is the smallest type of business organizations and is owned and controlled by one man. It is often a retail shop such as a grocer, butcher, newsagent, etc. All of the profits are taken by the owner. He sets his own working hours, conditions, holiday etc .

When a person wishes to start a one man business, he raises the capital from his own resources or by borrowing from friends and relatives. He may have difficulty in obtaining a bank loan .

The one man business has unlimited liabilities. This means that if a business goes into debt, the creditors can lawfully take owner‘s private assets. An unsuccessful businessman has to sell his house, car etc. to pay his business debts .

If the owner is ill the business may have to close down. The owner may have to work very long hours and if he makes no profit he gets no wages (90% of one man business become insolvent in their first 12 months‘ trading) .

An efficient transport system is vital to the economy. Without it the economy would completely break down. A businessman must always take into account cost, capacity, speed and convenience of transport .

Transport is used to bring food and raw materials into the country, to distribute goods throughout the commercial network, and also to carry exports to other countries .

There are three main types of transport: land, sea and air .

Land transport includes road and rail transport .

Road transport is the most convenient type of transport, and most businessmen use it. The development of road networks and motorways has increased the speed and efficiency of road transport, but the costs are high because of fuel prices, motor taxation, insurance charges, labour costs, maintenance, etc. The capacity of motor vehicles is limited by the size of the vehicle and the suitability of the road surface. In general terms, small cars and vans are used for short distance work and large vehicles with large capacities are used for long distance work .

There are more than 40000 miles of railway track in Great Britain and more than 10000 locomotives. Trains are used to carry both passengers and freight and each year British trains handle more than 250 million tons of freight .

Before the Second World War, the British railways were mostly owned by four private railway companies. Their names were Great Western, Southern, London north Eastern and London, Midland and Scottish. These private railway companies were bought out by the British government in 1947. The state owns and controls them .

They now make up British rail .

Heavy loads can be carried very cheaply by rail. The ability of the train to pull heavy loads up steep hills is the main capacity-limiting factor, but generally the trains are able to carry extremely heavy loads. Train is not a very convenient method of transport because the goods have to be on-loaded at the start of the journey and offloaded at the end of it; and then taken (usually by road) to the final destination .

Recently their has been an increasing use of containers on the railways, which can be used to transfer the goods quickly from rail to road or from road to rail. This saves a lot of on-loading and off-loading time .

Rail is generally cheaper to use than the other types of transport, especially if heavy loads are required to be carried long distances without having to worry about speed. It is therefore quite cheap to send coal, iron ore, cement or other bulky goods long distances by rail. The railways will take these goods slowly on their journey, using any locomotives that may become available .

The speed of passenger trains makes them a very convenient inter-city method of transport for businessmen. The railways are also the chief carriers of mail in Great Britain .

CASE 3 Animal Rights Suzanne had always believed in animal rights, though she had never been a member of any animal-rights organisation .

As she was walking along the high street one day, she saw a poster announcing that a circus which used performing animals was coming to town. She felt upset at first, and then angry .

As the days passed, her anger grew. She decided to do something about it .

That evening, she wrote a short letter to the local paper criticising the use of performing animals in circuses .

When her letter was published, she was astonished by the response. Her telephone never seemed to stop ringing. Apart from one person, all her callers were against the circus visit .

She also received a number of letters of support, including one from the secretary of an animal rights organisation in London, inviting her to form a branch .

One-Woman Campaign Suzanne was so encouraged that she decided to continue her one-woman campaign .

The circus was being held on a common which was owned by the council .

She wrote a letter to the council, asking it to ban the use of animals in the circus .

In its reply, the council said that a contract had already been made with the circus, and it had no power to alter it now, even if it wished to do so .

Suzanne was determined not to be put off. She sent a circular letter to all the local people who had contacted her, telling them what had happened. She invited them to a meeting at her home to discuss what further action they could take .

Nineteen people came to the meeting. They decided to write to the circus owners asking them not to use performing animals. If they refused, they threatened to organise a massive protest campaign .

Circus Options When the circus owners received the letter, they discussed all the actions

they might take. They decided their options were:

to ignore the letter;

to reply, stating why they thought there was no harm in using

animals:

to write a letter to the local paper, explaining their point of view;

to invite representatives of the protesters to visit the circus to see how well the animals were treated;

to ask for police protection;

to employ a security firm to keep the protesters away from the common;

to withdraw all the animal acts, apart from the horses;

to take out all the animal acts;

to cancel the visit altogether .

Insurance is a financial protection against an event which may happen .

Assurance is a financial protection against an event which must happen .

What does it mean?

People may insure their property against fire and theft and the members of their families against an accident and ill health .

Everybody has to die, that‘s why death insurance is called assurance. Death is not usually an accident .

In the case of life (or death) assurance a sum of money will be paid to the next of kin of the assurance person when that assured person dies or after the premium payments have been paid for an agreed length of time, say 10 years or 25 years .

There is also a kind of assurance called endowment or pure endowment which is a kind of nest-egg saving and this money, plus the interest that has accrued, can be paid to the assured person after a period of time, say 20 years. This method of saving can be used, for instance, for when the person reaches 21 years of age or 65 years of age or other time when he feels that he will need a capital lump sum .

Insurance/assurance companies deal with about 60% insurance and 40%assurance .

Companies can calculate statistically the risk involved in any insurance or assurance contract. Generally if the risk is high then the premium that has to be paid will also be high. For example, some areas are more liable to have burglaries than others, so in these higher risk areas the premiums for insurance against burglary will be higher. Statistically young car users are more likely to have a driving accident so the premium the young person has to pay will be higher than that which an older person has to pay .

To provide the service to their customers and to make a profit, the companies invest their customers premiums (which they receive every day) in the best possible way and make very large profits for their shareholders .

When a person or company wishes to insure or assure they will fill in a proposal form, then, if the company is willing to accept the risk involved, they will pay a premium (weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually) and be issued with a policy. The policy sets down in full detail the conditions agreed between the parties involved .

CASE 4 Finding a Shop Karawan is looking for premises for a launderette. Dave, the commercial manager in a local estate agent's, is taking her to look at two shops. They visit Wellington Road first .

"As you can see." said Dave, "the premises are in really first-rate condition .

They've been very well maintained. I must say there's a great deal of interest in the shop. In fact, just after you rang, two other people phoned about it."

"What was it used for previously?" "It was a boutique" "Would I have to get permission for change of use?" Dave consulted some papers. "No, there'd be no problem about that."

"I see the next rent review is in two years' time," said Karawan. "Have you any idea what the new rent will be?" "It's far too early to say yet." said Dave. "The commercial market is a little fluid at the moment. But, the owners have always been pretty reasonable with their rent increases."

"There's one thing that bothers me," said Karawan. "I notice there are double lines outside the shop."

"That's no problem. There's a car park just off Stiles Road. In any case most people walk to launderettes, don't they?" Real Bargain They then went on to Newman Road .

"This is a real bargain," said Dave. "It's a very low rent for a shop just off the high street and the next rent review is five years away. It could be just what you're looking for. As you can see. it was used as a launderette before. The plumbing's all in place, so you've only got to hire the machines and you're in business."

"What happened to the previous owner?" "I'm not quite sure. My assistant handled these premises. I think the owner retired," Dave added, rather vaguely. "He must have done quite well anyway .

There are lots of young families in flats around here. They must have been pleased to have a launderette so handy. And there's no problem with parking .

There are no yellow lines in the little streets off Newman Road."

12. ADVERTISING Advertising is used to create consumer interest in a product and also to increase the sales of that product. There are 3 types of advertising: descriptive, persuasive, both descriptive and persuasive advertising together .

Descriptive advertising gives the most important facts about the product. It is the cheapest form of advertising and is used a lot by the small trader selling through the local paper. It usually says what the product is; how much it will cost; where it may be obtained. Example: 1972 Ford Escort 500. Telephone London 1234 .

Persuasive advertising tries to persuade people that the product which is being advertised has a special quality or usefulness which makes it much better than other similar products. It is used a lot in television advertising where consumers are persuaded to think that if they buy that product they will become very popular or very happy. This is a psychological approach, and it is hoped by the advertiser that people will be persuaded to buy the product. The method uses association of ideas .

Brand names are used in persuasive advertising. Example: 1993 Ford Capri 2000 – good condition – low mileage, a bargain, first to see will buy this attractive car .

Advertising media are numerous. Among them newspapers are. There are both national newspapers and local newspapers. Advertising in the national press is usually much more expensive than advertising in the local press. Both types of advertising are sold by the column centimeter, the half page and the page. A page in a national newspaper may cost many thousands of pounds for one day. This is because national newspapers have very large circulations (they are read by a lot of people) .

CASE 5 Dead men tell tales The storm arrived from nowhere. Neither the captain nor the crew had an inkling of the horror about to engulf them. The first hint of danger came at 9pm on September 7, 1842. The Caledonia was rocked by a huge squall. Moments later, the seas grew wild and the crew were battling for their lives. As their ship broke its back on the rocky north Cornish coast, they found themselves flailing around in the foaming surf. One exhausted survivor made it to the shore, where he was saved by the local vicar. His eight shipmates were not so lucky. They were battered to death by monstrous waves, their corpses eventually being washed ashore. They were buried by that same clergyman. That, at any rate, was the vicar's version of events. But an eyewitness to the tragedy hotly disputed his claims. He accused the parson of fabricating his account in order to boost his standing in the community .

Jeremy Seal's book investigates the mystery that surrounds the Caledonia's last voyage. It is a lively and colourful narrative that jumps effortlessly from history to travelogue to genealogy. What really sets it apart, however, is his decision to weave fact with fiction. Cracks and holes in the narrative are plugged, sometimes to dazzling effect, with imaginative e-constructions .

13. SOME KINDS OF ADVERTISING The cinema screen is used for advertising by local and national traders. It is difficult to charge how effective cinema advertising is .

Technical journals are mostly used as an advertising medium by large manufacturing and distributing companies. They are read by persons and companies who are interested in this particular kind of product, and the journals also contain other information that is useful to the readers. Technical journals are usually printed once a month. Examples are The Hairdresser, The Radio and Television Magazine and the Farmers Live Stock Journal. Advertising in technical journals is a very good method of advertising .

The Motor Show, the Boat Show, the Radio Show and the Ideal Homes Exhibition are a few examples of fairs and shows. Dairy products may be advertised at agricultural shows. Aircraft may be advertised and displayed at the Farnborough Air Show. The disadvantage is that the shows and exhibitions are expensive to organize .

It is very difficult for advertisers to tell whether a particular advertisement of method of advertising has been effective, but there is no doubt that without advertising the customer would never hear of some products. Perhaps the most effective advertising of all is the recommendation of the product by a satisfied customer to a potential customer – advertising by word of mouth .

CASE 6 The height of success If you are tall, handsome and slim, you will be paid more Tall men are better paid than their shorter colleagues, according to researchers .

And fat women are penalised by being paid less than thin ones. Overall, the message is that beautiful people do better at work than their less attractive colleagues .

The results emerged from a survey of more than 1 1,000 people aged 33 carried out by London's Guildhall University .

It suggests that looks matter both for men and women .

If average earnings are 20,000, an unattractive woman will lose 11 % of her salary - 2,200. An unattractive man can expect to lose 15% or 3,000 .

The researchers claim that employer prejudice over appearance is widespread throughout the economy, but they suggest that there is massive variation depending on occupation .

Ugly women suffer the largest pay penalty if they are in clerical and secretarial jobs. Small, fat secretaries earn 15% less than their slim, beautiful female colleagues .

Attractive or tall men in sales jobs earn more than other people, including women .

Tall men earn up to a quarter more than colleagues while attractive men can earn 13% more. Tall women also have an advantage in sales, earning 15% more than their colleagues .

The survey's authors say ugly people are penalized far more than goodlooking people are rewarded. They argue that the Government must review antidiscrimination laws so they cover other prejudices, including appearance, which affect careers .

Economist Barry Harper, one of the report's authors, said: "Although there is some variation between jobs, the effects of appearance are generally widespread suggesting that they arise from prejudice and in particular, employer discrimination."

"There us an urgent need for business and Government to review their equal opportunities policy to address the issue."

The Guildhall research was backed by the findings of an American research project .

University of Michigan statisticians who examined data on more than 7,000 American men and women in their 50s and 60s found that the average pay of an overweight middle-aged woman is half those of her slimmer counterparts .

The findings, presented to the Gerontological Society of America in Washington DC, took into account health, marital status, and a number of other factors, but still demonstrated that weight was a key factor in earnings .

The older the woman, the more discrimination there is on the grounds of weight, the experts said .

However the effects of obesity were far smaller for men and not so significant, they added .

The study is the first to examine the effects of obesity on the earnings of the mature woman .

"Much of the previous work on the economic effects of obesity has focused on young adults who are just beginning their careers." said Dr Nancy Fultz, the social scientist who led the research .

"That an effect of obesity on net worth remains even when we consider other factors is consistent with the notion that obesity is economically burdensome for women."

"This may be due to cultural norms of attractiveness, which stigmatize obese women in a variety of ways."

The study is the latest in a growing amount of evidence suggesting that bosses tend to see overweight people as greedy and lazy, and that our increasingly image-conscious society tends increasingly to make judgements on physical appearance alone .

More than half the British male population and two in five women-some 20 million adults - are over-weight. Six million are classed as obese and the numbers are rising .

2. Would you prefer to be slim and tall? Why/why not?

14. Market research and marketing Most manufacturers carry out a market research before they commence to manufacture a new product and before they modify an existing product. Good, scientifically constructed market research is essential if the manufacturer is able to produce goods that the customer will buy and at a price that he can afford .

The prospective customers are asked a number of questions about whether they want to buy a new product and how much they want to pay. The research may be carried out by the company itself or by a market research company who specializes in this work .

The results of the research are analyzed and the company then is reasonably sure what to manufacture, how to pack it, where to sell it, and what price to charge the customer .

Price, method of selling, packaging, sales promotion are very important in the marketing of a product .

The price must be set at a level where the firm is able to make a reasonable profit .

Obviously if the firm has an efficient production process then it will be probably able to offer its products at a lower price than its competitors. If the price is set too high, then the sales may be low and the overall profitability affected .

The method of selling must be ascertained and choices may be made between the normal wholesaler – retailer method or mail order or direct selling, etc. The packaging is important and must be attractive and easy to transport. Sales promotion depends on advertising, price reductions for quantity purchases, free gift offers, after-sales service, display stands, and the use of specially trained sales and service staff .

15. The stock Exchange (Part 1) The Stock Exchange is a world market where the shares and securities of public companies, the British government, local governments, foreign governments and other organizations are bought and sold .

About 80 per cent of its business is actually in government securities. The Stock Exchange is responsible for supervising new issues of shares when firms become public limited companies, but most of its share transactions are in the existing securities. By providing a market for second-hand shares, the Stock Exchange makes it possible for investors to convert their shares into cash. There are about 3000 members of the Stock Exchange who are involved daily in the buying and selling of these shares and securities .

The Stock Exchange is an independent organization. The Council of the Stock Exchange, elected by its members, is the governing body which sets the rules and enforces standards. The main British Stock Exchange is in London and was founded in 1773. It has 22 branches in the main towns of the country .

Before October 1986 shares were bought and sold by Stock Exchange members called brokers and jobbers. The brokers bought or sold shares for members of the public and acted on their behalf. The jobbers bought or sold the shares from the market or other dealers and then sold them to the brokers .

In October 1986 there was a major reorganization of the way in which the Stock Exchange members conducted their business. These changes were referred to as the Big Bang. They no longer have separate Stock Exchange members acting as brokers or jobbers, for each member is now allowed to buy of sell shares on behalf of a member of the public, or buy and sell shares on his own behalf. The members are now called broker/dealers, and the new system is referred to as one of dual capacity .

Members of the Stock Exchange who specialize in certain types of share or security buying and selling are now referred to as market makers. The profit they make is called the market maker‘s turn. The broker/dealer approaches a market dealer or more than one market dealer and makes the best bargain he can on behalf of his client. If a deal is made then the contract is entered into .

CASE 7 Belt Up!

Eighteen months ago, two young sisters opened a small shop selling belts of all kinds for men and women - fashion accessory and trouser belts, money belts, key belts and sports belts .

Karen and Julia spent a long time choosing the name of their shop. They were both very pleased with the name they chose - Belt Up1 - as it seemed to attract just the right kind of customer .

Expansion Plans Their business partnership has done so well that they have decided to expand. They plan to move to a much bigger shop n the high street, and open two other branches elsewhere. After that, they want to print a direct-mail catalogue which will be sent to targeted consumers through a mailing list service .

They have worked out all the details of their expansion plans. All they need now is the money to finance it - 300,000 .

They have already asked their bank manager for a loan. He would only lend them enough money to open the high street shop, because he thought they were trying to expand their business too fast .

However, a number of people whom they have met through their business have been far more enthusiastic. Some of them have already said they might be interested in investing in the business- if it became a Limited Company .

Limited Company "There's nothing else for it," said Karen. "We'll have to form a company if we want to raise the money."

"Oh, 1 wouldn't like that at all. We haven't got enough money to buy 51 % of the shares. We'd be minority shareholders."

"That's right, but we'd still be running the business from day to day."

"It wouldn't be the same, Karen. If we had outsiders in the business, we'd never know what they might want to do."

"They wouldn't interfere as long as we were making good profits. In any case, Julia, if we remain a partnership, we're personally responsible for all debts if anything does go wrong."

"That's never bothered us up to now."

Valuable Asset "It might do if we expand. There's another thing, too. At the moment, anyone can open a shop and call it 'Belt Up!'. Once it's registered as a company name, no one else can use it. Our name is too valuable an asset to lose."

"Oh. I don't know," said Julia, who was always far more cautious than her older sister. "Maybe the bank manager was right after all. Perhaps we are trying to expand too fast. What if we formed a company and just opened the high-street shop. We could raise enough money then to buy the majority of the shares, so we'd still be in full control."

16. Merchandising .

Merchandising refers to the techniques used to sell products to consumers. A person or company that works in this area purchases a product from a manufacturer, and then sells it to shoppers. There are numerous techniques that a merchandiser may use to convince shoppers to buy the products he or she is selling. It is usually more than just setting products on a shelf and hoping that they are purchased .

The simplest way to define merchandising is to say that it is the way a product is sold. From the time a product is created, people are developing a plan for how to sell it. The type of packaging, colors, and slogans are all part of this process. Later on, which stores will carry it, where the product is placed in the store aisles, and how the retail store will promote the product that become important factors in the process. Products need to be visible if the store expects people to buy them .

A product will be marketed to a target audience, or the people most likely to purchase the goods and services being offered. This assures that the right product is available in the right place to the right people, and at the right time. It wouldn't make sense to have a huge stock of turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pies in July, but it does make sense in November in the US, when customers are looking to buy those things .

Products targeted for kids are a great example of merchandising that is available year round. Child-oriented products, such as cereals, crackers and cookies, or other products, are lined up on shelves low enough for a child to see and reach them. The packages are brightly colored, and often have cartoon characters on them. Toy stores typically do not have many items on hard to reach shelves, because they want children to be able to see all of the toys that they offer .

Merchandising is more complicated than just figuring out where to put products on store shelves. It involves a lot of careful planning. If a company orders too much of an item, and it might spoil or go out of style before it is sold out, wasting money. If too little of an item is ordered, people will buy it elsewhere once the business has sold out, costing sales. The seller has to be knowledgeable about statistics, good at math, and have a keen eye for details to be successful in the field .

17. THE WHOLESALER The wholesaler is between the manufacturer and the retailer and is often referred to as the middleman .

The wholesaler‘s premises are normally a large warehouse on the outskirts of a city, where large quantities of goods are stored .

Perhaps the greatest advantage offered by the wholesaler is the time, trouble and money saved for both the manufacturer and the retailer .

The wholesaler saves the manufacturer advertising costs;

- pays the manufacturer promptly for the goods;

- allows the retailer credit facilities (but the wholesaler will charge high interest rates if the retailer does not settle his or her account promptly at the end of the month);

- provides showroom facilities where large quantities and varieties of goods can be viewed by the retailers;

- gives expert advice to both the manufacturer and the retailers;

- provides large storage facilities for the manufacturer;

- helps the manufacturer by packing, blending, grading, labeling, etc .

Each kind of goods is supplied through its own special wholesaler, e. g. clothing by a clothing wholesaler, and food from a food wholesaler etc. Perhaps the most important task that the wholesaler performs for the manufacturer is advertising and acting and salesman. Without this help the manufacturer would become too deeply involved with the selling process and possibly neglect his main task, which is to manufacture the goods .

The manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer mark up the goods and take their share of the profits .

Sometimes, it is possible to trade without the help of the wholesaler and carry out direct selling. For example, Boots the Chemists manufacture many of the products they sell in their shops. However, the wholesalers do provide a very important service in the distribution of goods to the consumer and it would be almost impossible to manage without them .

CASE 9 Change of Ownership Martin worked as a fork-lift-truck driver in a small distribution firm. His basic wage for a 40-hour week was 4 an hour. Except when he was on his annual threeweek holiday, he also worked an average of three hours overtime a week. The rate for overtime was time and a half .

When a much bigger company took over the firm, the workers feared that some of them would lose their jobs and be made redundant. Rumours swept through the firm that wages were going to be cut .

Management Proposals Nothing happened for a while, but then the new management called a meeting with the shop stewards. Management explained their proposals for a new wages structure .

Shortly after that, all workers received a letter describing the new scheme .

Further details were given in the works newsletter that had just been started .

Martin found that he would now be paid an annual salary of 8,300 a year for a 40-hour week. No overtime would be worked .

In addition, he would receive a guaranteed bonus of 10 per cent, and even more if he exceeded his productivity target .

There would also be a company-wide productivity bonus, linked to the company's total performance. This bonus ranged from 50 to 250 a year in the new owner's other branches .

All the workers had been asked to vote on the new proposals. Martin didn't want to vote just as his union told him. so he decided to work out for himself how the wages offer would affect him .

18. How to Promote a New Product & Marketing Activities Getting a new product out for customers to see and try out is the first step in selling that product successfully. Even the best product will do little good for the public if they do not know it exists. Therefore, business owners or marketing professionals must utilize various marketing techniques to guarantee that the right audience knows about the product and that they receive the knowledge as effectively as possible .

Fortunately, there are a number of fairly simple marketing opportunities for spreading the word and ensuring sales .

Step 1 Offer promotional products. The majority of people love freebies, and creating an event at which you give away products is more likely to draw customers that might not otherwise have been interested. In addition, a promotional event creates an opportunity for you to send out a press release about the event - as well as the product

- and thus utilize the local media outlets, such as newspapers and news programs, for getting the word to the public .

Step 2 Order printed promotional material that shares information about the products .

Printed promotional material can range from simple flyers to more elaborate pamphlets that detail product specifications. In addition, business cards can be an excellent marketing tool. If the company features one product in particular, the business card can note that the company is home of the ______ product; or something along those lines, to keep the connection in mind for customers. And be sure to hand out as many of these printed promotional items as possible, to reach the widest desired audience .

Step 3 Create sample sizes of products and offer them to those who can review the products and offer feedback or a positive response. Focus on sending the samples to those with credibility in the industry, such as professionals or experts whose feedback will have more effect on convincing customers to try the product .

Step 4 Collect testimonials from customers who have used and enjoyed the product .

Testimonials can be a powerful tool for convincing potential customers to take the plunge, because they create the link between customers who trust the opinions of others like themselves. Suppose, for instance, that you have designed and are marketing a new range of hand lotion. Testimonials from customers can be powerful for persuading others to pass by more familiar names to use your product. What is more, testimonials that speak to specific cases such as reduced psoriasis or elimination of chapping on hands can help to convince others with similar concerns .

19. Organizations Organizations need to be understood and intelligently managed because they are an ever-present feature of modern life. When people gather together and formally agree to combine their efforts for a common purpose, an organization is the result. All organizations, whatever their purpose, have four characteristics: coordination of effort, common goal or purpose, division of labor, and hierarchy of authority. If one of these characteristics is absent, an organization does not exist. Coordination of efforts multiplies individual contributions. A common goal or purpose gives organization members a rallying point. By systematically dividing complex tasks into specialized jobs, an organization can efficiently use its human resources. Division of labor permits organization member to become more proficient by repeatedly doing the same specialized task. Organization theorists have defined authority as the right to direct the action of others. Without a recognized hierarchy of authority, coordination of effort is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. Organizational classifications aid systematic analysis and study of organizations. There is no universally accepted classification scheme among organization theorists. Two useful ways of classifying organizations are by purpose (by carrying out a wide range of purposes, they enable society as a whole to function) and technology. In regard to purpose, organizations can be classified as business, not-for-profit service, mutual benefit, or commonweal .

In regard totechnology, there are long-linked (assembly lines), mediating (commercial banks, insurance companies, telephone companies, etc), and intensive technologies (hospitals). Each of these technologies has characteristic strengths and weaknesses .

20. Motivation Motivation refers to psychological process that gives behavior purpose and direction .

It is an important area of study for managers because it helps them better understand our most valuable resource, people. (Realistically, motivation is just one of many explanations of work behavior, such as one‘s knowledge and emotional state and organizational factors.) Even though the employees in one study ranked interesting work the highest among the things they wanted from their jobs, their supervisors believed that they wanted good wages above all else. This type of misperception of employees‘ needs can cripple a motivation program. Pollster D.Yankelovich contends that traditional motivation tools such as fear, money, strict supervision, and the work ethic are inappropriate for nearly half of today‘s labor force in the USA. Among alternative motivation theories, Maslow‘s needs hierarchy theory, Herzberg‘s twofactor theory, and expectancy theory stand out as particularly relevant for managers .

According to Maslow‘s message, people always have needs, and when one need is relatively fulfilled, others emerge in a predictable sequence to take its place. His fivelevel needs hierarchy, although empirically criticized, makes it clear to managers that people are motivated by emerging rather than fulfilled needs. Assuming that job satisfaction and performance are positively related, Herzberg believes that the most that wages and working conditions can do is eliminate sources of dissatisfaction .

According to Herzberg, the key to true satisfaction and motivation is an enriched job that provides an opportunity for achievement, responsibility, and personal growth .

Expectancy theory is based on the idea that the strength of one's motivation to work is the product of perceived probabilities of acquiring personally valued rewards. Both effort-performance (What are my chances of getting the job done if I put out the necessary effort?) and performance-reward (What are my chances of getting the rewards I value if I satisfactorily complete the job?) probabilities are important to expectancy theory .
